Salt Your SEO:
Kickstart Your SEO With These 5 Easy Steps!
Imagine this: you’ve poured your heart and soul into creating your dream hair salon. Your hair artists and stylists are top-notch, your decor is Instagrammable, and clients rave about their experience and results. But when it comes to attracting new customers online… crickets.
You might be wondering – why aren’t people finding my business on Google? The answer lies in search engine optimization for hair salons.
“What’s that?” You ask. SEO isn’t some mystical tech jargon; think of it as laying out breadcrumbs that lead straight to your salon when someone types ‘best hair salon near me’ into a search engine like Google or Bing.
We’re diving deep into the digital realm. From grasping Google’s algorithms, crafting a compelling website, to maxxing your Google Business Profile. All the while not forgetting our engagement in local events – all these strategies coalesce to enhance your online presence.

If you’re a salon owner, the digital landscape can seem daunting. Navigating the space with its unfamiliar (and sometimes foreign-sounding) terminology can be confusing, but don’t panic – I’m here to help you understand SEO and why it can be super important for your salon!
So, to start real quick, what is SEO? In simple terms, search engine optimization, or SEO as we’ll call it from here on out, is all about making sure that when people search Google for services similar to yours, your salon pops up at the top of their list.
As of 2020, searches on Google for “local” + “business(es)” increased over 80% year-over-year. People are using Google to find local businesses more than ever! That means ranking in the top for “local hair salons in [your city]” is not only more important than ever, it’s also much more beneficial to your bottom line.
To get started with understanding how to optimize your search engine presence, let’s talk numbers first. Believe it or not, 70% of U.S. small businesses have no structured approach or strategy towards local search engine optimization. Just by being here, you’re ahead of the game!
This leaves a huge open field for salons who want to improve their visibility locally – something critical since most clients come from nearby areas. By utilizing proper local SEO tactics, your dream business could rise above competition on platforms like Google Maps – effectively reaching potential customers before they even walk down the street.
An effective and efficient SEO strategy combines on-page, off-page, and technical SEO elements. There’s a whole host of tasks to do, but these elements include website keyword targeting related specifically to ‘hair salons’, fixing broken links, and building links from other websites to yours.
SEO can get pretty jargon-heavy pretty fast, so all you need to know for now is that it’s not just one button you click, it’s many mini levers you have to pull in order for your website to be comprehensively optimized.
If you’re not tech-savvy and completely new to SEO, the prospect of boosting online visibility may appear intimidating. I got you. Just as trimming a client’s hair requires precision and expertise, so does improving your online visibility with a SEO strategy that’ll actually work.
The first step in starting your journey is creating a compelling business profile on Google. Why? Well, Google Business Profiles are essentially the yellow pages of today’s digital age. Having such a profile helps 85% of consumers discover local businesses – including hair salons.
A strategic business profile makes sure potential customers get to know who you are and what services you offer at one easy glance. That makes a world of difference when people are hyper-busy and only spend seconds to decide if something is worth their interest.
Here’s something even more fascinating: Google loves websites that provide clear information about their location, operating hours, and customer reviews – all features that can be added to your Google Business Profile.
This isn’t just another mundane chore on your checklist that can be put off; think of it as laying out an attractive welcome mat for both search engines and future salon clients alike. I highly recommend setting up your profile today if you don’t have one! And not just for Google. You’ll also want to set up profiles on Yelp and Apple Maps for full coverage.
Keep in mind that if your salon has more than one location, each location needs its own Google Business Profile! This helps keep things organized and makes sure people can easily find each location.

If you don’t have a website for your hair salon yet, this is your next step. And yes, you really do need an actual website – not a Linktree or Milkshake.
For an easy out-of-the-box setup, I recommend Squarespace. And for a highly customizable setup, I recommend Showit. I know hair salons that use both, so it’s really up to your preferences and needs to pick one!
Hair salon appointment booking tools like Vagaro, Square Appointments, Boulevard, and Fresha can all be seamlessly integrated into either Squarespace or Showit.
Make sure to create a Home page, About page, Service Menu, Salon Policies, Privacy Policy and Terms & Conditions, and a Contact page at the minimum. Of course, you should also design a way for new clients to easily and quickly book an appointment.
For inspiration, I recommend checking out these hair salons with great websites:
As a rule of thumb for business websites, I don’t recommend:
The next step in starting SEO from scratch involves identifying keywords or phrases associated with your hair salon that people use when making google searches – we call these ‘salon keywords’. This might sound like hunting for needles in haystacks but tools such as Google Keyword Planner help simplify this process.
Finding relevant and strategic keywords ensures quality leads (i.e. potential clients) visit your website rather than simply increasing website visits without any tangible benefits. This is what A LOT of digital marketing agencies do, so I recommend being careful who you hire!
The average monthly search volume of these keywords should factor into your choices.
Also, aim for longer phrases known as long-tail keywords, such as “best hair colorist [my city]” – rather than shorter generic ones like “hair salons”. These specific queries have less competition making them easier to rank for but still bring qualified traffic because people searching this way have clear intent behind their question.
Once identified, these keywords should be woven naturally into your website’s copy, SEO Page Titles, and SEO Page Descriptions (called different things on different website platforms) to increase visibility on search engine results pages. But remember: putting too many keywords is like overusing hairspray – it spoils the natural look.
Make sure that every webpage has one main (and unique) keyword that it targets and make sure this is included in a page’s SEO Page Title. If you don’t do anything else with keywords, definitely do this!
To help you find those keywords, I recommend using beginner-friendly keyword research tools like Ubersuggest or KeySearch. There are more advanced and pricier tools, but all you need to get started is one of these two, I promise.
Now that you have a website set up, it’s time to get set up with analytics! To start nice and easy, all you really need to do is set up Google Analytics and Google Search Console (a ‘domain’ account, not ‘URL prefix’). Both tools are 100% free and should be set up from day one so that you can start seeing how people are interacting and finding your website from day one.
In terms of what’s most important to track on Google Analytics, I recommend keeping an eye on new users, average session duration, and acquisition sources. For Google Search Console, you’ll want to stay up-to-date with overall clicks and click-through-rate (hint: a great CTR is between 1% and 3% for most businesses).
To cover all of your bases, I’d also recommend setting up a free Bing Webmaster Tools account for your salon. This helps increase your visibility on Bing as well as other platforms that use Bing in their backend (like ChatGPT!).
Links from other websites (i.e. backlinks) are the unsung heroes of SEO. They’re like little votes of confidence that signal trustworthiness to Google, which is a big deal. With the rise of artificial intelligence, spammers, and scammers, Google is prioritizing its algorithms’ ability to determine whether a website/business is truly trustworthy or not.
So, what exactly is a backlink? Let’s start with citations. In simple terms, these are an online reference to your local business that includes its name, address, and phone number (NAP). Imagine being mentioned in all corners of the web – from directories to social media platforms; that’s some serious visibility.
If your salon has more than one location, do this for each location and don’t put the exact same name for each location. For example, you’d want to do ‘Pink Salon – W. 23rd St’ or ‘Pink Salon – Denver’ and ‘Pink Salon – San Diego’.
NAP consistency across everywhere on the web is vital for any hair salon wanting more than just passing traffic. Think about it as creating harmony among your digital identities – no matter where people search for ‘hair salons,’ they find consistent information about yours. Not only do potential clients love this, but so does Google!
But here comes the curveball: inconsistent NAP data can lead Google astray when determining which results are most relevant. You wouldn’t want potential clients directed towards another beauty industry competitor because of confusion over addresses. That’s a quick way to lose out on precious clients.
Local business directories (free or paid) offer great opportunities to create backlinks with ease. The Yellow Pages may have been replaced by search engines, but trust us when we say directory listings still pack quite a punch.
I recommend googling ‘small business directory in [my city]’ and adding your hair salon to all of the free ones. When it comes to ones you have to pay for, I can’t recommend them because they tend to charge way too much for the benefit you’re getting from them.
Local SEO optimization is more than just an optional strategy; it’s a necessity in this day and age. Building backlinks effectively helps decrease other marketing spends and build brand awareness, both directly and indirectly.

I know when you think of SEO you don’t really think of social media, but the two play off of each other in majorly underrated ways.
When you build an engaged audience on social media, they think of you the next time they need a hair service, go to search for you online, and book an appointment online. This direct way of people searching for your business tells Google that your brand is known and trustworthy.
Instagram is an absolute goldmine when it comes to promoting hair salons. It’s all about visual appeal, right? What better place than Instagram to showcase your stylists’ work?
You can use this platform effectively by regularly posting before-and-after transformations or sneak peeks into salon life. Keep things engaging with captions that ask questions or surprise and delight.
Moving onto another social giant: Facebook. This platform allows you even more space.
Create albums showcasing different services offered at your salon or share client testimonials with photos in posts. Regularly engage with comments and messages – remember, every interaction counts towards improving online visibility.
To start building relationships, check out local groups related to beauty and wellness within your local community on Facebook.
Why do all this?
So, whether you’re a local salon just starting your digital journey or an established business looking to boost online visibility, leveraging social media platforms is not only recommended but crucial. It’s time we turn those likes into appointments and get those sale confirmations ringing.
Now that we’ve covered the basics of SEO, let’s dive into the heart of long-form content marketing: blogging. A strategic blog can drive strategic, high-quality traffic to your salon’s website and improve its search engine ranking across thousands of relevant keywords.
I always like to say: if your website doesn’t mention a keyword, it can’t rank for it.
The first step in creating a successful blog is gaining hyper-clarity on your target audience. Are these the same folks you speak to on social media? Or do they have different psychographics?
When finding relevant keywords, think about what potential clients might type into Google when looking for services you offer. Terms like ‘hair salon,’ ‘beauty salon,’ or even specific services could be important keywords. And you’re not alone on this journey – tools like UberSuggest and KeySearch are here for you.
Incorporating these keywords naturally into your posts increases their visibility on search engines, helping attract quality traffic (that means real people likely to book an appointment). But remember – don’t overdo it; keyword stuffing hurts more than it helps. Just use them naturally as they come up. Speak as if you’re writing directly to your audience, not for Google.
Also, go one step further – what problems are potential clients experiencing before booking an appointment? Are they googling ‘how to extend the life of your haircut’? What about ‘how to know it’s time to get a haircut on long hair’? These topics are strategic because they allow you to show up at a time in their customer journey that’s highly relevant to the services you provide.
A well-optimized blog post isn’t just about keywords. It should also provide immense value to readers. Consider offering hair care tips or explaining different styling techniques – anything that positions your salon as an expert in your field will increase trust with potential clients. Always aim to go above and beyond – this sets you apart from other hair salons.
Your expertise matters because, according to Google’s E-E-A-T principle (Expertise, Experience, Authoritativeness, Trustworthiness), webpages created by actual experts tend to rank higher than those lacking professional, firsthand input.
If no one views it, does it really exist? To ensure your blog posts get a nice push as soon as they’re published, I highly recommend promoting them on social media sites like Facebook and Instagram. Think: Why would/should someone stop scrolling, click, and take the time to read this blog post? What can I say that will have that effect?
That’s the insider expert thinking on setting up a strategic blog for hair salons. Picking the right keywords, crafting captivating content, and promoting it well are all key steps. Each one plays a vital part in drawing organic traffic to your site and ultimately, driving more appointments.

You’re a beauty staple in your community, and you’ve got the talent. You know your way around scissors and hairdryers better than anyone else. But how do you make sure people search your name when they need a fresh cut, color, or style? One of the more unexpected SEO strategies is to get involved with local events.
Yes, it might sound offbeat at first, but participating in community happenings can boost both online visibility and foot traffic. Remember that time when Aunt Sally found out about that new pizza place because they sponsored her favorite 5K run? It’s a similar concept.
The beauty industry thrives on personal connections, so take every opportunity to show off what your salon offers. Collaborating with other businesses gives exposure to similar audiences too – all while helping improve those important Google searches ranking.
Start by identifying social media post ideas related specifically to different local activities such as running promotions tied directly into event themes or offering exclusive discounts for event participants; this could even mean creating fun hairstyles matching specific occasions (green braids for St.Patrick’s Day parade?). This adds flavor while simultaneously boosting SEO keywords usage throughout social media posts promoting these special deals.
To really hit home, use social media platforms like Instagram or Facebook (or any platform where most of your audience hangs) during an event itself. This shows customers firsthand how much you care about your community. Make sure to tag locations, use local hashtags, and engage with people’s comments. This gives a real-time boost to your online visibility and indirectly signals to search engines that you’re an active local business.
Of course, be sure to get the consent of anyone you post because there may be negative repercussions if you don’t. Privacy is important in today’s day and age, so this is a must!
SEO for hair salons is no longer optional, it’s essential. You’ve learned how Google plays a crucial role in your salon’s online visibility and the importance of building a comprehensive SEO strategy.
You now know that creating an optimized Google Business Profile and launching an optimized website are key first steps.
From developing strategic blog content with relevant keywords to participating in local events, every bit helps elevate your digital presence. Remember: higher online visibility equals attracting more customers.
The road might seem long, but remember each step you take brings you closer to becoming the go-to salon people find when they search ‘best hair salon near me’. Let’s make sure yours is at the top!
